Guyon's Canal Syndrome--Rob Gray, MD
Guyon's Canal Syndrome
Guyon's canal Syndrome is compression of the ulnar nerve at the level of the wrist . Like Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Guyon's Canal compression often causes numbness and tingling in the hand that is worse at night. The pattern, of numbness is the same as it also affects the ulnar nerve distribution. Patients often have symptoms in the Ring and Small (Pinky) fingers.
Splinting the wrist in extension at night and steroid injections around the nerve can often alleviate symptoms. If these fail, surgical decompression has very favorable results.
I perform Guyon's Canal Release Surgery typically in conjunction with a Carpal Tunnel Release and through the same 1.5 - 2 inch incision. Very often, this is performed along with a Cubital Tunnel Release in order to ensure complete decompression of the ulnar nerve.
